Are open-face helmets safe?
The use of the open-face helmets that comply with the UN/ECE R22 type-approval was never was prohibited nor is it envisaged that it will be prohibited.
When it comes to motorbike safety, a helmet is essential. It doesn’t matter whether you’re riding a scooter in town, using your motorbike to get to work, or making short daily journeys: wearing a good helmet is a must.
And here arises a question that is quite common: are open-face helmet safe?
The answer is yes: provided they meet the relevant safety standards and are used correctly, an open-face helmet provides the same minimum level of head protection as a full-face or modular helmet.
An approved open-face helmet is not simply a comfortable or attractive helmet. It is a helmet that has passed technical tests to verify that it can protect the motorcyclist in accordance with the requirements set out in the regulations.
These tests assess aspects such as impact resistance, shock absorption, the fastening system and the helmet’s stability when properly fastened. In other words, it is not enough for it to look safe: it has to prove it.
Open-back headphones are particularly suitable for urban environments. Their design offers a sense of freedom and comfort for those who are on the move around the city.
This type of helmet promotes ventilation, offers a wide field of vision, is easy to put on and take off, and is very practical for those who are constantly getting on and off their motorbikes. That is why they are a popular choice amongst scooter, moped and motorbike riders in the city.
It is sometimes thought that an open-face helmet is less safe simply because of its shape. It is true that it does not cover the chin area in the same way as a full-face helmet, but that does not mean it does not protect the brain.
Size does matter, it’s of little use to choose a helmet that meets safety standards if it isn’t properly fitted correctly after all. The correct size is a fundamental part of safety.
A helmet that is too large may move whilst riding or shift in the event of an impact. A helmet too small can prove uncomfortable and end up causing the the motorbiker to lose their concentration whilst riding because they feel annoyed.
Your helmet must sit securely, without wobbling, but without being too tight. Furthermore, it must always be fastened. Even if it’s just a short journey. Even if you’re only popping ‘just round the corner’. On a motorbike, accidents happen without warning, and your helmet can only do its job if it’s fastened correctly.
Before buying an open-face helmet, it’s worth asking yourself a few simple questions:
Is it approved? Is it my size? Does it fit snugly? Does it have a secure fastening system? Is it comfortable for everyday use? Is it suitable for the sort of journeys I make?
If the answer is yes, an helmet with an open face can be a safe option, comfortable and practical for getting around the city.
