Does an expensive helmet offer better protection? Myths and truths that need clarifying.

Let’s get straight to the point.

If you’re looking for a helmet for a motorbike, sooner or later you’ll find yourself faced with the big question: Doesan expensive helmet offer better than a cheap one? Because obviously, when you see prices that rise like the needle on the rev counter, it’s easy to think that your head will be safer the more you pay.

Spoiler: not always.

Myth No. 1: the more expensive it is, the safer it is

This is the most widespread myth. The one that keeps cropping up in shops, online forums and pub conversations.

The reality is far less glamorous: a helmet protects because of the approval which it has, not because of the price that is shown on the price tag.

All motorcycle helmets sold legally in Europe and in 28 other countries must comply with a single, very clear set of safety standards: UN/ECE Regulation 22.06. This certification guarantees that the helmet has passed tests for impact resistance, durability and energy absorption, amongst others. It doesn’t matter whether it costs €90 or €900: if it is certified, it meets the mandatory minimum safety standards.

So that no, paying more doesn't automatically mean that your head is better protected.

So… Why do some helmets cost so much?

Good question. The price of a helmet tends to rise for other reasons: lighter materials, premium finishes or exclusive designs. All of this adds up to safety, comfort and appearance.

But beware: comfort is not the same as protection. A more expensive helmet may be quieter, lighter or more stylish, but that doesn’t make it an invincible magic shield.

Fact No. 1: Fit matters more than price

Here comes the uncomfortable truth.

Between two approved helmets, a poorly fitting helmet—no matter how expensive it is—offers less protection than a simpler one that fits your head perfectly.

The helmet should sit securely, without moving, without causing any unusual pressure points, and without wobbling when you turn your head. If it doesn’t fit properly, it may shift or lose its effectiveness in the event of an impact.

That's why, when it comes to choosing a motorcycle helmet, the fit is key. Much more than the price.

Fact No. 2: all the helmet approved protect

Certification is not just a formality. It is the foundation of everything.

An approved helmet has undergone numerous tests to determine the level of protection it offers in all respects. This means it is designed to fulfil its primary function: to protect your head in the event of an accident.

From that point onwards, the difference lies in the use you are going to make of it. It is not the same to get about every day around town as it is to make long journeys by road. But in terms of safety basic, type approval is essential.

So, is it worth spending more?

It depends on you.

If you value comfort, lightweight construction, ventilation or a specific design, spending more might make sense. But if your priority is safety on a motorbike, you don’t need to spend a fortune to be well protected.

The important thing is to choose an approved helmet that suits your everyday needs and fits like a glove.
