Key signs that it’s time to replace your helmet

A motorcycle helmet is not just an accessory: it is your greatest guarantee of safety on every ride. However, many motorcyclists use the same helmet for years without knowing that its useful life is limited, or that even a minor impact can compromise its protection.

At NZI, we take safety very seriously. That’s why we’ve put together this guide to help you know when it’s time to replace your helmet… before it’s too late.

What is the useful life of a helmet? Although helmets do not have a visible “expiration date,” you have probably heard that manufacturers recommend replacing them every 3-5 years. You may wonder: 3-5 years from when it was manufactured? 3-5 years from the first time I used it? Is the useful life of a helmet that is used daily the same as one that is only used in the summer?

Why should I replace my helmet? Because the materials it is made of (resins, protective and comfort padding, straps, fastening mechanisms, etc.) degrade over time due to exposure to sunlight, humidity, perspiration, and improper storage, among other causes.

As you can see, there are many factors that determine when a helmet needs to be replaced and its “expiration date.” We recommend that you replace it whenever there are new updates and technological advances to ensure maximum comfort and safety. Don’t wait more than 3-5 years. At NZI, we are constantly looking for ways to improve the specifications, design, and production of our helmets and their components. We are continually innovating because we love the lives of motorcyclists, including our own.

Have you had a fall? Then your helmet could be damaged (even if it doesn’t look like it).

One of the main reasons to replace a helmet is if you have been in a fall, even if the helmet does not appear to have any visible cracks. What matters is what is inside: the helmet’s internal structure may have been compressed, losing its ability to absorb impacts. And that makes it a risk. Rule of thumb: if the helmet has been hit (whether hard or not), replace it. It is an investment in your life.

Are you using a helmet that is not currently approved?

The UN/ECE R22.06 approval standard has replaced the previous UN/ECE R22.05 standard, which in turn replaced UN/ECE 22.04, requiring more stringent impact tests, rotation assessment, etc.

If your helmet does not comply with current regulations or at least UN/ECE R22.05, it is very old, so consider replacing it immediately. Safety should not be left to chance.

Don’t take chances: your helmet is your first line of defense.

We know that sometimes it’s hard to part with a helmet you’ve shared thousands of miles with. But safety must evolve with you.

Do you have any doubts? Try it yourself.

At NZI, in addition to providing general recommendations, we have created an objective guide to assess the condition of your helmet. If you want to know for sure whether your helmet can still be used or if it is time to replace it, take the “NZI Traffic Light” test.

Answer these key questions:

  • Is the exterior, the casing, broken or cracked?
  • Does it have any puncture marks?
  • Have you applied paint?
  • Have you applied adhesives?
  • Have you applied gasoline?
  • Have you applied solvents?
  • Has the helmet been involved in a serious traffic accident or suffered damage from a free fall?
  • Are the straps incorrectly attached to the casing?
  • Are the straps damaged or broken?
  • Does the micrometric lock not lock perfectly in all positions?
  • Is the protective padding broken or worn?
  • Have you lost any of the protective padding?

If you answered “Yes” to one or more of these questions, your helmet should be replaced.

This assessment is part of our technical standards and is based on objective tests of structural integrity and materials. Don’t leave your safety to chance!

Changing your helmet doesn’t just mean better protection: you can also gain in comfort, lightness, ventilation, acoustics, aerodynamics (sun visors, anti-fog visors, etc.), and design.
